Interview with Rick MarrJULY 20th, 2009 at 10:10 AM
He was born and raised in upstate New York and have been shooting documentary photography since 1990. He relocated to San Francisco in 1994 and still call it home (when not traveling). His photos have shown at 111 Minna and Luggage Store galleries and have been featured in Gomma, Color, Juxtapoz and Hamburger Eyes magazines. Jeremy Fish and he documented his recent trip to Rome with a book collaboration, and he have a section in his second retrospective book; both to be released in 2008...his name is Rick Marr. Rick, for our readers that aren't as familiar with your work, can you please introduce yourself? I've been shooting documentary photography for 19 years. i grew up in upstate New York and moved to san francisco in 1994. After moving around a bit i realized SF was the place to be and have been able to do some traveling since then. In general, i find better photos when i'm around new things, so traveling always brings some welcome inspiration. Whats your weapon of choice when to it comes to photography? I have always used a canon elan slr film camera. My first one lasted 17 years and i've had my second one for about two years so far.
What are your thoughts on post-processing photographs? I haven't done much with post-processing except for the required darkroom stuff in college and a little bit of digital stuff lately. These days i have my negatives scanned and adjust the density, exposure etc... before publication. Have you ever experimented with film? Or is your work strictly digital? It's actually the opposite. my work is all film. I only use a small point and shoot digi to shoot crappy low res photos for my blog as the nightowlcoholic on fecalface.com.
Are there any special projects your working on at the moment? I just submitted photos for a section of the juxtapoz photo book that is scheduled to be released september 1st 2009. i'm in a group show at sf camera works in june of this year, i have some photos in the next release of cutter photo magazine and i have a shirt coming out with you guys around august. Rick, thanks for the time. Any closing words or suggestions for aspiring photographers? Just the basics, keep shooting, learn from your mistakes, slam your beer or put your balls on the table.
